Donate Life!

September 30th, 2010 | Posted by james - the dad in Family - (4 Comments)

Today is the 14th Anniversary for Chanin’s lung transplantation so I’ve naturally been thinking about the topic of organ donation.  If you’d like to donate you can sign up at Donate Life and, more importantly, talk to your family about it and make your wishes known to them.  Simply put, Chanin wouldn’t be here on earth with us if some family hadn’t graciously decided to donate their loved ones organs who they tragically lost at a young age.  Nobody likes to think about this topic but in the event of some unfortunate tragedy your family will need to make some important decisions about organ donation and your wishes will guide them in the right direction.

.

Chanin’s donor is a hero, and we even named our son’s middle name after him (Timothy) in his honor.  You can be a hero too!  Many people don’t want to think about death, but please just think about the following.  Any one of us could be involved in a fatal accident tomorrow.  Imagine if the very same day, or shortly thereafter, a person who was on the brink of death was brought back to life because of one of our organs.  It might be a sick child, a college student, a mother of 4, a grandfather, etc.  That person could go on living, working, celebrating holidays, driving the kids to soccer practice, singing, dancing (and much more) ALL BECAUSE you decided to donate some organs that you no longer needed.

.

How else can you save someone’s life so easily?  Imagine your lungs allowing someone else to breathe, or your heart continuing to beat long after you’re gone.  What better way for your legacy to live on?

.

I think the biggest reasons for people choosing not to donate are 1)  myths 2) people not expressing their wishes to their family.  I won’t go into organ donation myths here but you can read about them on the Mayo Clinic site <-click.  I will say that they are called “myths” for a reason and that organ donation is almost always portrayed the wrong way in TV/Movies.

.

So, now are you going to talk to your family about organ donation and sign up to be a donor?  If you have chosen not to be a donor I have one last question.  If you found out a donated organ would enable you, your mother/father, or your child to continue living would you accept it, or let them pass on?  If you’d accept it then you owe it to society to be an organ donor also.  If you have religious reasons then this site has some excellent information.

.

As of 5:26pm today there are 108,860 people waiting for the gift of life.  Doesn’ t the “gift of life” have a nice ring to it?  How does that compare to the last big gift you gave someone, which was probably a Snuggie Dog last Christmas?  Do the right thing!

p.s. If you’ve signed up and/or talked to your family about your wished to donate your organs let us know in the comments!  Also, if you have any questions about the process Chanin would welcome them.

Sunny Day in AZ!

September 19th, 2010 | Posted by james - the dad in Family - (4 Comments)

I took the little dude out for a run in the grass today and it was HOT!  It started cooling down a couple weeks ago near Phoenix but the temps have picked up again (record highs yesterday).

We’re looking forward to the cooler weather in the coming months!

Dinner with Dad and Jennifer – Joe’s Farm Grill

April 12th, 2010 | Posted by james - the dad in Family | food - (2 Comments)

Dad and Jennifer were recently in town for their Spring break vacation and we all decided to go to Joe’s Farm Grill for a yummy meal.

joes (I “lifted” this picture since I didn’t take any of the actual restaurant.  Doh!)

Joe’s is located in Gilbert, AZ and is a part of Agritopia.  The Agritopia Project is “an effort to design and build a neighborly community around an urban farm.”  It’s a really cool idea and you can read more about it here.

The restaurant is right next to the actual farm where much of the food the restaurant serves is grown.  Here’s a picture of Gavin patiently waiting for some dinner. gavin-waiting-for-food

After arriving at Joe’s we waited in line for about 20 minutes and then ordered at the window. I ordered the Fontina burger with onion rings.  The burger was sooo good and topped with fontina cheese, pesto (herbs from the garden), roasted red pepper, mushrooms, and arugla.  Oh yeah, and the homemade pickles are the bomb! fontina-burger   Gavin is still waiting for dinner.  gavin-wants-fries

Chanin ordered the BBQ Bacon Blue burger with chili fries.  Her burger was topped with bleu cheese, bacon, onion rings, and BBQ sauce.  Gavin loved the chili fries!  Dad (Grandpa) ordered the Ribs and BBQ Pork platter and Jennifer got the Ahi sandwich.  The ribs were tasty and the Ahi looked nice and fresh. bbq-burger

.

This was our first visit to Joe’s Farm Grill and we’ll definitely be back!  The weather is just about perfect right now and we love Spring time here in AZ.  At Joe’s there are huge grass areas and lots of trees which makes it a perfect place for the kiddos to run around.  When the weather is this nice, and the food is that good, you just can’t beat it!

Walk for Wishes – 2010

February 17th, 2010 | Posted by james - the dad in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

This year we’re once again participating in the Walk for Wishes for the Make A Wish Foundation! This will be our 3rd year walking, and 2nd year with little Gavin. The mission of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
.
As some of you know, Chanin was granted a wish in the past (1995), which makes this organization extra close to our hearts. We’ve also been inspired by a little boy named Zack who lived here in our town of Maricopa, AZ. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with cancer but we still think about him and know that the Make A Wish Foundation made a big difference in his life.
.

To donate please go to: http://WalkForWishesArizona.kintera.org/faf/r.asp?t=4&i=330043&u=330043-205456795
We appreciate any donations and support you can offer! No amount is too small and it’s tax deductible!
.
Thanks in advance!!

Gavin’s 1 Year Update

December 15th, 2009 | Posted by james - the dad in baby | Family - (4 Comments)

We were in California during Gavin’s first birthday but once we got home we took the little guy in for his 1 year doctor appointment.  It’s so hard to believe how fast he’s grown.  He’s becoming our little man already!! We can still remember those sleepless nights and our little guy sleeping the the bassinet beside us.  And I remember when he would fall asleep on my chest.  We miss some of those moments but luckily we have 8 bajillion photos to remind us!

.

Now, Gavin is really growing and starting to walk and talk.  He says variations of mommy, daddy, and kitty.  He also says hi and waves, and sometimes claps.  And each day he walks further and further!  We can’t wait to see what he does next!

.

The baby stats:

  • Weight:  22lbs 7 oz
  • Height: 32 in

Visit from Grandma!

December 15th, 2009 | Posted by james - the dad in Family - (1 Comments)

OK, so Grandma visited in late October and I’m a little behind with the updates!
.

Gavin had a lot of fun hanging out with his Grandma! We ate at In-N-Out, relaxed at home, and went to the Arizona State Fair (for the 2nd time during the year). Here are the pictures!
